Since 2007, AYALA charity foundation has covered 36 cities, population centers, and 67 medical facilities in Kazakhstan under the "Breath life" project. "Breath life" is a project on the equipping children ICUs with vitally important equipment for saving newborn baby's lives. Under this project, our foundation plans to equip a "Kostanay regional hospital" with 5 phototherapy lamps in order to cure newborns from jaundice and following damages.
There are over 6000 childbirths in Kostanay hospital per year. The majority of premature babies among them are under the impact of toxic jaundice. Newborn jaundice - is an increase of toxic bilirubin level, which leads to severe damages of central nervous system. It manifests itself as yellowing of skin and eyeball of a newborn or couple month old baby. Too high level of toxic bilirubin in blood can cause irreversible brain damage, including developmental delay and athetoid cerebral palsy.
Newborn jaundice can be treated through phototherapy. Phototherapy - is a contemporary method decreasing level of the toxic bilirubin, which requires special phototherapy lamp. Phototherapy lamp is a special lightning of high intensity in green-blue lights specter which is absolutely harmless for a baby. Strong light changes the shape and structure of molecules of indirect bilirubin so that it becomes water-soluble and begins to be output with excrement and urine.
"Kostanay regional hospital" has applied to our foundation with a request to help purchase 5 units of phototherapy lamps for treating newborn jaundice. Phototherapy course would provide babies with recovery from newborn jaundice, resulting in hundreds of newborns being out of risk of developmental delays, loss of hearing and damages of central nervous system. This is a significant contribution to the decrease of infant mortality and disability in Kazakhstan!
