Summary

This project will build a community center in Masvingo, Zimbabwe, to provide a space to teach young girls and women how to sew reusable sanitary pads and supply basic business training. Rural areas do not sell menstruation pads, and if they are provided, they are often too expensive for most households. Tese Foundation aims to spur business opportunities for women through the selling of pads, as well as increase educational opportunities and health in the area.

Challenge

Girls and Women in rural Zimbabwe often do not possess the resources or information to manage their menstrual cycles in healthy or effective ways. This has been linked to negative impacts on education, health, and wellbeing. Often, young girls are not able to access sanitary materials due to a lack of supply and funds and as a result, do not attend school. This presents not only an educational problem but also a threat to the health and morale of girls.

Solution

By supplying and teaching students and women how to use and make reusable sanitary products, as well as how to sell them, this project will provide women and girls with reusable sanitary pads and improve school attendance amongst female students.

Long-Term Impact

This project will provide over 4000 women and girls with reusable sanitary and the skills to continue to make them. In the long-term, this will reduce menstrual stigma, increase educational opportunities for girls, and provide women with the skills to effectively manage their own business selling sanitary pads.
