The main goal of our Community Centre in Ioannina, Greece is to offer the local community of displaced people a safe place where everyone is welcome. The existence of the Community Kitchen is vital to ensure the participants have a warm dinner that fits their dietary restrictions. If you donate to our cause, we will thank you by sending you our recipe book: under 45 EUR you will get the e-book, and over 45 EUR the physical copy. Don't forget to check your e-mail so we can send the book !
The existence of this community kitchen is vital for numerous reasons. Concerning the food distribution methods in the refugee camps in Greece, there are serious shortcomings. Often, while there might be kitchen facilities in the camp, the people living in the camps are not allowed to use it. Simultaneously, the food they might be given often does not meet their dietary customs and can therefore not be consumed.
The existence of the community kitchen in the centre is vital in order to ensure the participants have a warm dinner that fits their dietary restrictions. But the kitchen serves not only as a place to feed people, but it is one of the core spaces in the centre, as it creates a sense of community, where participants cook for other participants, where volunteers cook together with participants, and where we learn about each other's culture through one of its most important ways: food.
Since its inception, BAAS' priority has always been to assist people by means of engaging in social activities and education. However, due to the great gap in refugees' most basic needs compared to the rest of the population, we decided to open a community centre that combines all these activities. Our philosophy is that skills development activities can only be efficient when the participants' basic needs are covered. The community kitchen ensures that those needs are covered.
