Creating Brighter Futures through Sekoly Sarisambo

By Aaliyah Farah | Programs and Office Assistant

In our continued commitment to community development, SEED's progress in Sarisambo, Madagascar, is not only helping to improve infrastructure but also working to break barriers to education and combat poverty. Despite the statistics that only one in three children completes primary school and over half have never attended school in Madagascar, SEED's assistance aims to disrupt this cycle of educational limitations.

A key challenge in Sarisambo has been the lack of adequate school infrastructure and poor hygiene conditions, leading to frequent illnesses among students. This, compounded by accessibility issues, particularly affects girls, who often drop out of school upon menstruation due to inadequate facilities. Specifically, the Sarisambo Primary & Lower Secondary School has a combined 7 classrooms and 5 bathrooms for 726 students. Cramped conditions, unprotected water sources, zero handwashing conditions, and no menstrual hygiene management (MHM) exacerbate absenteeism and increase disease transmission. SEED's construction of cyclone-resistant classrooms and gender-segregated latrines with MHM facilities directly tackles these challenges, creating a safe and hygienic environment conducive to learning for all students.

SEED Madagascar is in the process of finishing two comprehensive construction projects in the Anosy region, targeting both primary and secondary schools. These initiatives will involve the construction of new classrooms, sanitation and hygiene facilities, rainwater harvesting systems, and a dedicated house for teachers. Recognizing the critical role that teachers have in shaping the educational landscape, SEED's provision of on-site teacher accommodation works to further reduce absenteeism and enhance teaching quality. By mitigating the distance between home and work, this initiative not only ensures consistent teacher presence but also fosters a supportive learning environment that is essential for the student’s success. SEED is working to not only enhance educational infrastructure but also work to facilitate the future resilience of these rural communities and the access they have to vital infrastructure and their environment.
