Summary

Project Sekoly is SEED's ongoing school construction project. It aims to improve health and education outcomes for children in rural communities of southeast Madagascar. Alongside school buildings, we construct rainwater harvesting systems, latrines, menstrual management facilities, and deliver WASH education sessions. We also aim to mitigate our environmental impact by offsetting our carbon footprint and establishing plantations for sustainable community harvest

Challenge

Madagascar's education system is facing a crisis. Schools are overcrowded, lacking sufficient infrastructure and sanitation facilities. In the isolated region of Anosy, half of 6-10-year-olds have never attended school and only 32% of children enrol in secondary school, while a staggering 97% of the population lack access to basic sanitation. However, we know that the carbon footprint of schools' building contributes to climate change- whose effects adversely impact vulnerable communities

Solution

SEED will implement two construction projects in the Anosy region, at a primary and secondary school. We will build new classrooms, sanitation and hygiene facilities, rainwater harvesting systems, and a house for teachers. By enabling these of multi-faceted projects, we are future-proofing the resilience of these rural communities and their environment. With education being a great stepping stone for alleviating poverty, and with schools being an accessible place for sanitation and drinking.

Long-Term Impact

By providing a safe, adequate, and healthy space for students to learn, while supporting teachers' capacities and needs, SEED will improve access to quality education for primary and secondary school children in Anosy. Receiving a good education will enable students to flourish in life and realise their full potential, driving development and prosperity for the entire region.
