Every day, families in crisis or poverty are forced to give up their children in the hope of a better life. Decades of research prove what we know in our hearts: a family is the best place for a child to grow up. It is estimated that there are over 50,000 children growing up in orphanages in Uganda. Research has shown that nearly all children in orphanages have at least one parent or large extended families, dispelling the myth that "orphanages" are full of "orphans". For every three months in an orphanage, a child under 3 will suffer a one-month developmental delay. They are more likely to be victims of abuse, and are more vulnerable to trafficking and exploitation.
We reduce the need for orphanages by strengthening communities and social workers to support families. We work with government, donors, orphanages, and families to imagine a Uganda where every child grows up in a safe and loving family. Whether through empowering families to stay together or by placing children who are in orphanages with families - we believe every child deserves to grow up in a safe and loving family home.
We want to see every child in Uganda grow up in a loving family. We proved that children can be successfully placed into loving Ugandan families whether through tracing and reintegrating them into their own families, finding loving foster families or placing them with permanent, Ugandan adoptive families. By taking a grassroots approach, we are ensuring communities are taking the lead on how to protect their children.
