Building Peace through Play in Tumaco

In Tumaco, Colombia, football is creating more than opportunities to play, it is helping children and young people build confidence, strengthen relationships and develop the skills they need to navigate challenging environments.

As part of our Football for Peace Empowering Girls in Tumaco project, we have continued to integrate the Paz a la Mochila methodology into our activities, extending these tools to boys’ football groups as well. The methodology encourages children and young people to reflect on peace, emotions and relationships, creating opportunities to develop skills that extend beyond the football pitch.

We have also strengthened the capacity of our local team. Two professionals from Fútbol Pazífico completed Sports with Principles training and are now incorporating these tools into their sports sessions. This approach supports children’s physical and tactical development alongside their emotional and social growth.

Through football, participants are developing values such as empathy, cooperation and resilience, while improving their physical, tactical and emotional performance.

For children growing up in communities affected by violence, having a safe space to meet peers, express themselves and build positive relationships can be incredibly important. Football provides that space: helping young people strengthen their confidence and contributing to protective environments where children can feel supported and connected.

Every training session is an opportunity to learn, connect and grow. By combining sport with peacebuilding and emotional learning, we are helping children and young people in Tumaco see football not only as a game, but as a pathway towards stronger relationships, greater resilience and more peaceful communities.

Your support helps us keep these safe spaces open and ensure that more children can experience the power of sport to build confidence, connection and peace.
