We helped flood victims!

By Riel Andaluz | Sr. Manager for Corporate Partnerships

In times of crisis, your support has been a beacon to guide us to be prepared and provide immediate response. This funding pot you have contributed to supports the mechanism strategically designed to allow us to go immediately in the ground to conduct rapid assessments and response during emergencies.

Last November, families in the Visayas region were affected for months due to the shearline flooding. The shear line, an area where cold and warm air meet, dumped six weeks worth of rain in the province of Northern Samar and spawned floods beginning Tuesday, November 21. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) recorded 619 millimeters of rain  within just 24 hours. This was more than its normal November rainfall of 457.8 millimeters. and higher than the 24-hour amount of rain during the passage of Tropical Storm Ondoy (Ketsana) in 2009.

A total of 224,977 families or 879,425 persons were affected including 16,423 families or 41,495 persons inside 139 evacuation centers and and 9,356 families or 32,695 persons living outside evacuation centers. A total of 74,290  people have been displaced people across 6 regions, 17 provinces, 95 cities/municipalities, and 1,147 barangays.

Days of heavy rain and flooding have caused over Php 515 million in damage to public infrastructure and agriculture in the three provinces on Samar Island;  hundreds of houses have been totally or partially destroyed. Classes in schools have been suspended. Both the Provinciaal Government of Northern Samar and Eastern Samar have declared a provincial-wide State of Calamity.

Your support combined with those of our other donors has:

  • Enabled our humanitarian response unit to be deployed to affected areas and conduct a Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis in key municipalities in Samar.
  • Helped affected communities in rebuilding their livelihoods,  provided Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) interventions to ensure access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities, and provided shelter assistance, recognizing the importance of safe and secure housing.
  • Provided learning continuity by providing 1255 back to school kits to children and 55 teaching kits for teachers

The shearline flooding is just one of the many emergencies we responded to in 2023; all made possible with donors like you.

Thank you very much for your support! You are making a difference in the lives of Filipinos.
