Transforming Despair into Hope: Our Journey with Essien and Otuekong

Dear donor,

Every year, 15,000 children face unfathomable accusations of witchcraft. Many don't survive this accusation. We invite you to reflect on the rescues of Essien and Otuekong. While we are mindful not to dwell on the children's distressing histories, it is crucial for you to recognize the profound impact your support as donors has on their lives.

The night of Essien's rescue
Ten years ago, we sat in a church at midnight, witnessing a young boy named Essien facing an unfounded accusation of witchcraft and a perilous deliverance ritual. This ritual, involving the deadly "Killer Bean of Calabar," could have ended his life, as it tragically does for many children in our local communities. That night, we rescued Essien from a fate no child should ever face. Now, he stands as a testament to resilience, recently celebrating his university matriculation. Watching Essien flourish from a boy into a remarkable young man has been an extraordinary part of our journey at Land of Hope. We're filled with pride for his achievements. Congratulations, Essien!

Otuekong's new chapter
In October 2022, we stepped in to save Otuekong, a boy wrongfully accused of witchcraft and subjected to violence by his own father. Prior to our intervention, his father had faced arrest for his abuse and a chilling attempt to bury his son alive—a fate not uncommon for those labeled as witches. A local prophetess had even subjected him to a 'deliverance' ritual, intended to rid him of evil spirits. We took immediate action, reporting the abuse to authorities. Today, after 1.5 years with us at Land of Hope, Otuekong's transformation is profound. He has shed the trauma and fear that once shadowed him. Now, he delights in his education and in playtime with friends like Abasiofon, Abraham, Mighty, and Hope. It is your support that has rewritten Otuekong's story from one of despair to one of hope and joy. Your contributions have been his lifeline.

A country in crisis
As Nigeria grapples with an unprecedented economic downturn, with inflation causing hunger and despair, the crisis has reached our doorstep. The soaring costs of essentials like rice and beans (for instance, a bag of beans has soared from 56,000 naira to 108,000 naira) force us to divert funds from education to sustenance.

With gratitude that knows no bounds,

Your team at Land of Hope
