Summer has started in Morocco everything is dry and water shortages are going to be a problem … but there is no shortage of injured, sick or abandoned animals.
As the weather gets hotter, the seasonal battle against ticks and fleas also heats up. For our older dogs in the New and Clebs shelter, ticks and fleas are more than an itcy nuisance. The blood borne zoonotic diseases that they carry can weaken the dogs immune system and even cause anaemia. We need help to keep on treating the dogs to keep the parasites away.
As usual at this time of year we are constantly getting messages about dogs and cats in need of help. Before the summer, several of the communes round about Agadir routinely take action to “clear” the streets of dogs before the arrival of the tourists from other parts of the country. We know the heartbreaking cruelty that lies underneath these words.
This year there is also an unusually high number of road traffic victims being reported to us.
We are helping all that we can, everyday the staff at the refuge are looking at how we can reorganise things to squeeze just another 2 or 3 dogs into our space. Everyday we are worrying how we can pay the vets bills and buy more food. Everyday is another day we have to get through as best we can, doing what we can where we can. But everyday is also a day that we have to say “no, sorry we can’t help”.
Every week we visit the local dog pound, where the city place all the street dogs they have rounded up. We take food and provide staffing support to try and make sure the animals are fed and looked after, but it is a never ending struggle.
Each week we take some dogs from the pound and move them into one of our refuges.
Thank you everyone for reading this far and for your support. We are all in this together, trying to do an amazing thing against all the odds.
These last few months have been very hard, but every animal saved and every time we see a photo of one of our animals living a wonderful life in their new homes makes everything worthwhile.
Change is coming, it is coming slowly but we believe it is coming. Every little thing we do makes a difference. Thank you for being there to help make the change.
