In 2020 shocking images of starving dogs held in the cities dog pound shocked animal lovers all over the world. We are the only organisation who are actively working to make sure these scenes are never repeated. Each month we deliver 3000 USD of food to the dogs in the pound to save them from starving. We also pay for extra staff to make sure the animals are looked after and visit regularly to rescue the very young or old dogs, as well as those injured or sick.
Street dogs are a massive problem in Agadir and Morocco as a whole and they present a risk to the population as Rabies is still endemic in Morocco. While plans are in place to introduce TNVR to control the population and eradicate rabies, they have not been implemented yet. Dogs are being caught on the street and held in a facility by the city, but there are no government funds currently allocated to feed the animals or pay for veterinary care.
We have been providing food for the animals in the dog pound, however our costs are rising and donations are struggling to keep up. We have to face the choice between feeding the dogs in the city dog pound or feed the dogs in our own refuge. The end is in sight. After lots of discussion there are plans to build a new animal shelter with funding allocated to feed and care for the animals, but this is not going to happen this year. This project will see us through to the end of the year
In the long term the introduction of TNVR will control the street dog population and with a properly funded animal shelter in the city we will not be called on to contribute to the food costs. But we have to get there. We aim to continue to positively support the fledgling approach to the street dog problem as long as we can. We want to make sure it works and proves once and for all that humane methods are the most effective
