Oh what a summer it is going to be!
Everyone is suffering in the heat (if you are not, please let us know and we will come and visit) … the dogs and cats especially but the team at SARA have been busy making sure every dog and cat has access to shade and as much coolness as possible. The dogs are making great use of the small pools kindly donated by Magda Muhmenthaler and brought over to us earlier this year.
We also received a wonderful grant of $30 000 from SPCA international to help us with the animals we recovered from the Agadir City Animal Centre when we left in March.
As it is so hot, this is going to be a short newsletter. In a nutshell the news is:
Moroccan Law on Stray Animals
There has been a lot in the news about the killing of dogs in Morocco and more recently about the new law recently passed concerning the protection of stray animals. I have a copy of the draft legislation translated to English and here are the highlights. I have to stress that I am not a legal expert, nor can I guarantee the accuracy of the translation…and as with any new legislation the detail of implementation is still to be worked out. But I hope this gives you an idea of what faces us.
The stated aim of the legislation is to protect stray animals from disease and other risks by ensuring their care and providing them with decent living conditions. It also sets out how they aim to prevent the dangers that they pose to society by controlling reproduction and curbing their spread. The headlines are
They have still to draft the regulating standards of stray animal care centres, and there is a 2 year timeframe for shelters to get registered.
I hope this gives you an idea of what is likely to happen. As they say “interesting times ahead”.
Arrivals
In the last 3 months we have taken in another 32 dogs… despite saying we couldn’t take in any more dogs, sometimes it is not possible to say no.
Sponsorships
Sponsorship is a great way to help us look after all the animals at SARA. It really does make a huge difference to us knowing that support is coming in each month.
Since we last reported, we have had 45 new sponsorship plans from supporters in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Morocco, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Adoptions
Since the start of April 29 dogs have found new homes.
Sterilisations
In the last 3 months we have sterilised 86 dogs and 150 cats bring our total for the year up to 159 dogs and 302 cats.
Huge thank you to Magda Muhmenthaler and the Swiss Tierbotschafter Foundation for supporting the cat neutering program.
And that is all for now… see you in October!
Please let us know if you have any questions about our work.
Thank for always supporting us, we can’t keep doing this without you.
