Save dogs in the Agadir City Pound from Starvation

Summer has arrived in Morocco everything is dry and water shortages are going to be a problem … but there is no shortage in injured, sick or abandoned animals.

As usual at this time of year we are constantly getting messages about dogs and cats in need of help. Before the summer, several of the communes round about Agadir routinely take action to “clear” the streets of dogs before the arrival of the tourists from other parts of the country. We know the heartbreaking cruelty that lies underneath these words.

This year there is also an unusually high number of road traffic victims being reported to us.

We are helping all that we can, everyday the staff at the refuge are looking at how we can reorganise things to squeeze just another 2 or 3 dogs into our space. Everyday we are worrying how we can pay the vets bills and buy more food. Everyday is another day we have to get through as best we can, doing what we can where we can. But everyday is also a day that we have to say “no, sorry we can’t help”.

We are committed to helping the dogs in city dog pound.  For them - we are the only hope.  Each week we visit, taking food and checking on the conditions.  Each week we come away having found some particularly vulnerable dogs who need our help. 

Recently the team visited during the Eid holidays and found no staff, so the guys stayed, cleaned up and made sure that the dogs had food and water.

We recently rescued a sweet family, mother and 2 puppies who had obviously been dumped on the streets after having had a home.  Dogs that are not born on the streets have even less chance of survival so we have taken these three as a priority... but each time we leave dogs behind our hearts break a little bit more.

We hope to have a meeting with the City Commune soon to discuss the long term situation, but until then we just keep going, doing what we can.

These last few months have been very hard, but every animal saved and every time we see a photo of one of our animals living a wonderful life in their new homes makes everything worthwhile.
