Nearly 12,000 men die from prostate cancer every year in the UK. And over 47,000 men are diagnosed with it. Tackle Prostate Cancer acts as the patient voice for just under 100 prostate cancer support groups across the country and this project will allow us to support those groups with grants to carry out PSA tests in the community to help with early diagnosis. We want to #SaveaDad.
Every year in the UK, over 47,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and nearly 12,000 men die from it. At the moment, unlike some other cancers eg breast, there is no screening program for prostate cancer in the UK. However, early diagnosis of prostate cancer makes a huge difference to a man's outcomes but over 50% of diagnosed cases are for advanced prostate cancer and these are the cases that contribute almost exclusively to our unacceptably high death rate.
PSA testing is the only viable front-line screening test. The risk of having prostate cancer is greater for men over 50 (1 in 8 men), for black or mixed race of African or Caribbean descent (1 in 4) or if you have a close relative who has had prostate cancer or breast cancer. Tackle Prostate Cancer encourages men to know their PSA and to Get a Score on the Board!
We can reduce the number of deaths from prostate cancer by earlier diagnosis
