Victims of human trafficking are all around us. We train people to recognize and respond to signs of trafficking, and we support victims once they are rescued from their traffickers. Victims often require medical care, a place to live, legal assistance and transportation to a safe community. Your gift raises awareness, saves people who are being trafficked, and helps victims begin a new life.
Human trafficking is a serious problem along the U.S. - Mexico border, and our community of Brownsville, Texas is a funnel through which victims of human trafficking flow. Our unique location provides us with an opportunity to identify and rescue victims -- those who are passing through and those who are held here in the Rio Grande Valley.
We have convened organizations and individuals who deal with human trafficking--law enforcement, the judicial system, victim relief, legal aid and others--to collectively identify and implement the best strategies to identify victims, help others identify victims, rescue trafficked people, and respond to the needs of victims, who need counseling, legal assistance and medical interventions, in addition to having their basic needs met.
Because people and organizations are all working together to address human trafficking, we now have more eyes on the ground, more people trained to understand what trafficking is and what it looks like. We work together seamlessly to assist victims and identify and prosecute perpetrators. Over time we will reduce human trafficking in our community.
