Summary

A wheelchair user's subway transfer in Seoul can take 28x longer than for others. 26% of wheelchair users have given up on jobs due to mobility barriers alone. Since 2016, Muui has united 200+ citizen researchers, including 30+ wheelchair users, to map every transfer route across Seoul's subway, now live at subwaytransfer.kr. Your gift keeps this map alive - for 2.5 million disabled Koreans and every tourist exploring Seoul by wheelchair and stroller.

Challenge

Getting around Seoul is a maze if you use a wheelchair. Seoul's subway network has grown to 24 lines over 50 years - but it was never designed with wheelchair users in mind. Every transfer becomes a search for a working elevator, a long detour, or a wait for staff assistance. At Seoul subway, it takes 18 times farther and 28 times longer to transfer for wheelchair users than non-wheelchair users. Giving wheelchair users and other people with limited mobility information on how to transfer will

Solution

Muui's transfer map work began in 2016 and has expanded every year since - first as an all-volunteer effort. and now became a transfer web service (subwaytransfer.kr). The web lets a rider enter a start and end station and instantly see the most accessible transfer path - which elevator to use and which car to board. You can help Muui expand the number of stations this map covers from 96 stations across Seoul(as of September 2026) to 50+ more stations in the Metropolitan area.

Long-Term Impact

This project will not only reduce subway transfer time of wheelchair users but lower psychological barrier of them: Sia, daughter of Yunhui Hong, Muui's chairperson actually ventured onto Seoul subway alone at age 12 - after seeing this map. "For the first time, I found the courage to commute by subway." - a 29-year wheelchair-using office worker, after discovering the map. The map created by 200+ citizen researchers became one of the most prominent accessibility movement in Korea.
