The Gennie Dean Caring & Sharing Cancer Support Group has continued to strengthen its support network for individuals facing cancer across The Bahamas.
During this reporting period, 10 new members joined our community, 10 individuals received direct financial assistance, and 54 cancer patients and survivors benefited from our ongoing programs and services.
We hosted monthly support meetings, Step Into Wellness sessions, launched our new Cup of Hope Wednesdays fellowship program, provided one-on-one mental health support, conducted two hospital visits, and continued offering practical guidance and encouragement through our active WhatsApp community and peer buddy system.
We are also grateful to have welcomed new volunteers and strengthened partnerships, resulting in more referrals and increased awareness of our services throughout the community. This year, we were also pleased to support three men, reinforcing our commitment to serving everyone affected by cancer.
The greatest impact of this project continues to be the sense of belonging it creates. One cancer survivor shared that attending Cup of Hope Wednesdays helped her overcome the isolation she began to experience after completing treatment. While many people assume the journey ends when treatment does, survivors often struggle to adjust to a "new normal." She described the fellowship and encouragement she found as a reminder that she did not have to walk that journey alone.
We also provided emotional support to five newly diagnosed individuals who were overwhelmed by fear following their diagnosis. One woman told us, "This group is my lifeline," a powerful reminder that compassionate support can be just as important as practical assistance.
While our impact continues to grow, so does the need. The rising cost of cancer treatment places tremendous financial pressure on families, regardless of whether they have health insurance, and requests for financial assistance and mental health support continue to increase.
Looking ahead, we are working to establish partnerships that will expand access to mammogram and Pap smear screenings, grow our Sunflower Pantry, host our first RestoreHER Retreat to promote emotional healing, purchase additional mastectomy bras and prostheses, and strengthen the organization's capacity by securing funding for essential administrative operations.
With the continued support of our GlobalGiving donors, we can ensure that every person facing cancer has access to practical resources, compassionate care, and a community that reminds them they never have to face cancer alone.
