Birthing Kits saving lives in Afghanistan

By Dr Julie Monis-Ivett | Birthing Kit Foundation (Australia) Director

Home visiting in Kabul
Home visiting in Kabul

Thank you to our donors for helping us to send 30,000 birthing kits to Afghanistan last year.

For every $10 donated 4 kits are made and distributed to the developing country.

In Afghanistan 165 babies per 1000 births die in the first year, 60 related to the birth. 257 out of 1000 (1in 4) under 5 year olds will die. 311,000 under 5 year olds died in 2008. Nutrition and hygiene education has proven dramatic impacts on these statistics. With a maternal mortality rate of 1800 per 100,000 and lifetime risk of death in childbirth of 1:8 this is one of the most unsafe places on earth for a woman to give birth.

Terres Des Hommes works with us in the 3 regions of Kabul, Kandahar and Rustaq in Afghanistan.

From one report it was noted that with the distribution of ‘2359 kits only one woman died and no babies.’  Statistically speaking it would have been expected that 44-118 women (depending on region) and 330 - 400 babies would have died. The impact of combining their home visiting program with distributing our clean birthing kits has shown a dramatic decrease in maternal deaths and babies deaths across all 3 regions.

These women are not allowed to attend a health clinic and their only childbirth education along with health and hygiene education comes from midwives attending pre and post natal home visits.

The BKFA has worked with Terres Des Hommes for 4 years as the program has steadily grown.

With more funding the BKFA hopes to expand its program in Afghanistan to more needy women.

Thank you for your donation
