This project plans to pay for the medical treatments and school fees for 200 young orphans with Sickle Cell anemia, destitute, hail from the poorest villages of Kamanyola, South Kivu, the eastern DR Congo. As well as providing their carers with weekly psychosocial counseling and nutritious food, and organize staff training in disease prevention and management. After a few months, the children stabilized and/or improve in health so that they can attend school, and look forward to a bright future.
Over 4 million children who have been orphaned in the eastern DRC to the recent wars live in extreme poverty, it is hard for families to care for its orphans. About 2% of them have sickle cell disease preventing them to go to school for health complications and financial reasons. Instead of providing them with herbal medicines or referral to traditional spiritual healers, CEDAP will cover medical care, school and specific education/training costs to improve children's life expectancy and comfort
CEDAP makes available funding to pay appropriate healthcare costs and school fees for 200 young orphans with sickle cell disease as well as covering carers' costs such as food, bedding and warm clothing, counseling, and education in children's support and prevention of infections. We train 12 dedicated health professionals in health management to a common set of care standards. Both support provided lead to an improvement in the children's health so that they can go to school.
This project will support and help to improve the health of 200 young orphans living with sickle cell disease, enabling them to attend school, which will help both the carers and the sick children to gain knowledge on how to look after their health, prevention methods of sickle cell crises, medication to help sufferers manage symptoms at home, which in term will help to improve sufferers quality of life and less burden on the carers.
