Hands Around The World Jersey has been visiting Bugarama in south west Rwanda since 2010. Our aim is to promote good quality education and equitable opportunities for young people. One of the key strands of our latest three-year Ubumwe (Unity) project is aimed at breaking down barriers to girls education by promoting menstrual health support for girls in our nine partner schools.
Period poverty badly affects girls' performance in schools. Many girls from disadvantaged families are missing school or dropping out of education through lack of adequate sanitary materials. In our baseline study in September 2023 just 18% of schoolgirls in our nine partner schools reported that they had access in school to appropriate hygiene facilities and sanitary materials.
The availability of clean hygiene facilities and menstrual health education, together with counselling support from school matrons, will motivate girls to come to school more regularly. By the end of our three-year project we will provide (1) each of our partner schools with a Girls Hygiene Room equipped with consulting room, two bunk beds, shower and two latrines; (2) all girls of menstrual age at our partner schools with dignity bags containing pads, underwear, soap, wash cloth and Vaseline.
Decrease in absenteeism by girls. Increase number of girls accessing counselling service provided by school matrons. Decrease in teenage pregnancies among school children. Improved academic confidence and success among girls
