Tackling period poverty in Rwanda

By Mike Haden | Chairman. Jersey branch HATW

In Rwanda girls are more likely than boys to drop out of education. This is often linked to period poverty. Many girls from disadvantaged families are unable to afford basic sanitary materials and as a result are missing out on lessons.

Hands Around The World are working with our partners in Bugarama schools to deal with this issue in two ways

Providing Dignity Bags:

During our visit to Bugarama this year Myfanwy discussed the issues with matrons at our partner schools. She researched how we could source and provide locally-made dignity bags.

We are starting off with a pilot study at four schools with a review after 3 months. Each matron will keep accurate records of girls who visit their clinic and receive a dignity pack. One pack to be distributed per girl. Each pack contains pads, underwear, soap, wash cloth and Vaseline.

A donation of £5 will enable a Rwandan girl to keep attending school for a full year.

Improving girls’ hygiene facilities

Each school should have a Girls’ Hygiene room but these are mostly inadequate or non-existent.

By the end of our current three-year Ubumwe (Unity) plan 2023-25 we are aiming to ensure that each of our partner schools has a fully-equipped girls’ hygiene room. With the help of a grant from Jersey Overseas Aid we have already built our first room at Mihabura equipped with 2 beds, shower and toilet.

Only seven more buildings to go!
