Help for Couple During Cancer Recovery

By Lyssa Schmidt | Development Director

A couple struggling with medical issues and debt reached out to our program for help. While this couple will remain anonymous, we will call them Amy and Megan.

Megan, a veteran, was diagnosed with cancer and needed surgery.  She had to take 6 weeks off work unpaid to recover. While her treatment was covered, her wife’s were not.

Amy, her wife, needed iron transfusions 3 times a year that were not fully covered by insurance. Between that and the unpaid time off work, the couple was struggling with medical debt.

Of course, when it rains it pours. The couple’s dryer broke, which meant Amy was hauling wet laundry up from the basement to dry at the laundromat; Megan could not help as she had a no-lifting  restriction of more than 5lbs in her post-surgery days.

They couldn't really afford to replace the dryer, so through our My Neighbor program we were able to provide them with a dryer as well as a dishwasher to make all household chores a bit lighter during these difficult times.

It’s uplifting stories of help and hope your support has allowed us to provide over the years.

While we are closing this project specifically aimed at veteran needs, we continue to serve veterans through various programs at Jake’s Network of Hope. A

As our organization grows, we are streamlining our fundraising efforts to align more closely with the goals of each of these programs. Our programs include:

  • Eastern Wisconsin Diaper Bank providing baby diapers
  • On the Dot Alliance for Period Supplies, providing period products
  • A.C.E (Adult Care Essentials), providing incontinence supplies
  • My Neighbor- other basic needs requested by our community partners
  • National Cloth Network, providing cloth diapers to United States partners
  • Global Network, providing cloth diapers to global partners
  • Disaster Recovery, responding to natural disasters or refugee situations

Each of the programs has the potential to touch a veteran in a very different way, based on the individual’s needs. We appreciate your support of our work.
