Childhood leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells. Abnormal white blood cells form in the bone marrow. In Yemen, there is a single-center specialized in treating pediatric leukemia, which is in the capital, Sanaa. Reports say that dozens of children die due to a lack of necessary medicines and capabilities and due to the ongoing war in Yemen and the economic blockade imposed on them.
The Children's Leukemia Center is unable to receive the increasing number of children because it is the only center in the northern region of Yemen that is under severe economic blockade including Sanaa International Airport which has been closed. Due to the war, the center is unable anymore to provide medicines. Families are unable to purchase medicines because salaries were stopped in the last 4 years. Plus, the center is very small and does not accommodate a large number of children.
This project will contribute to, above all, the expansion of the building for children from faraway places to receive treatment in the capital. Through your donations, we will be able to purchase the hygiene equipment, sterilizers, and medicines that the center needs on a monthly basis to cover all cases arriving at it. On the other hand, a group of psychologists will be contracted to follow up on cases of sick children and provide them with psychological support on an ongoing basis.
Because of the expansion of the only center specialized in treating childhood cancer in Yemen, it will be possible to receive new cases from all governorates in the far reaches of the country. Providing the necessary medicines, solutions and full health care will increase the recovery rate among children and reduce the number of deaths.
