Covid-19: one school's story

By Celia Russell | Trustee, Tekkatho Foundation

New handwashing station!

The school in the project photos is Yay Kyaw Toe high school in the Ayeyarwady Delta Region of Myanmar. It is only accessible by boat - and almost impossible to reach during the rainy season!  The school has around 150 children from surrounding villages. Most students live too far away to travel to school every day and so they sleep at the school.

After the initial Covid-19 shutdowns, the school re-opened briefly in July with improved washing facilities, personal protection for students and staff. Students were taught in smaller classes over six days a week. However, in late August the Ministry of Education ordered the closure of all schools and the Yay Kyaw Toe students were sent home.

When schools do reopen, students again be taught in smaller groups with everyone wearing their new face-coverings. Since the children sleep at the school, it will be considered as one ‘cohort’ or ‘bubble’ which will be isolated away from the main village in which the school is situated.

Before the shutdowns, teachers have been using MyLibrary, our offline digital library, to explore subjects in more depth with more student-centred approaches to learning.  Over lockdown, thanks to your support, we have added Myanmar language healthcare materials to MyLibrary help communities prevent, contain and treat Covid-19 in places with limited medical facilities. The school now plans to use MyLibrary as the point for disseminating detailed information and reliable guidance on reducing infection risks and managing local cases in the community.

If you have any questions about the eTekkatho MyLibrary project, or about our work, please do get in touch with us.  Thank you so much for your continued support! www.tekkatho.foundation
