We are so grateful to everyone who has supported the Community Nutrition Project and happy to report that the project is doing well.
The most active part right now of the Project includes the Nkosi Bar Program. At Mpisi Primary School, HERD has started with the Grade R learners at the school. The group of learners are between the ages of 5 and 6, during this time a lot of critical physical and cognitive development takes place. There are approximately 160 Grade R learners in the school and the children receive a bar every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The next step is to take the pupils weight and measurements every three months and build a database of statistics. These statistics will then be compared to a global database as a reference to determine whether the Nkosi Bar has a positive impact on the children’s development. The hope is to scale the Nkosi Bar program up to the Grade 1 groups as the project grows. As of the time of writing a total of 7 500 Nkosi Bars have bee handed out at the Mpisi Primary School from January.
The next step will be to erect a vegetable garden at the school. The vegetable garden will be used to supplement the children’s daily ration at the school. The children get one meal at the school per day, for many of these pupils that will be the only meal of the day. The vegetable garden will be made by re-using old vehicle tyres from the reserve that our operation is based on. As tyres have no real end of life cycle in South-Africa, it is important to think of creative ways to re-use these tyres. Raised beds can be built from old tyres and painted in cheerful colours to decorate the garden. The garden will also serve as a basis for environmental education for the children.
The Scouts program will serve as the third aspect of the project. This focus on mental and personal development for the children. The aim is to make use of a small portion of certain school days to for environmental education based on the Scouts principle. This will take place after the construction of the vegetable garden.
We could not do all we do without your support, we are so blessed to have you on this road with us
Thank you so much.
