Returning Home

My name is Gabriela Sánchez Martínez. I am originally from San Miguel Chimalapa, Oaxaca. I am Zoque and I come from an impoverished but hard-working family. In my village women were not allowed to study and grow professionally, yet because of my desire to study, my family allowed me to improve myself to reach for my goals. But my family could not afford the school fees and pay for room and board as well.

Fortunately, I arrived in 2010 at Centro de Compartimiento (CDC) where they provided me with emotional support, room, and board, sharing a space with young women from other indigenous villages. They sheltered me during my university studies. Many people were guiding my steps at all times to help me achieve my goals.
I want to mention that my stay at CDC was very good. I could not complain about the company and what they provided for me, but one day, wanting to see the “outside world” and have freedom with no one telling me what to do, I decided to leave CDC before I finished my degree in psychology.

The years outside of CDC have taught me that it is not good to make quick decisions and distance yourself from people who really care about your well-being. Many of my dreams were interrupted because we live in a society where there is violence, insecurity, and corruption, and as women we are vulnerable.

After a few years away from the CDC, I felt the need to get in touch with the community again, but I was blocked by fear. Due to everything that had happened in my life my head was spinning with indecision. First I had to make peace with myself and then reconnect with everyone who lives in that beautiful house, my family. Although new girls come and go they are part of me. If the walls and furniture had the opportunity to speak, they would tell me it was the most beautiful place I have ever experienced. Nowhere have I felt as special and protected as at CDC.
That is why I say that I am the fruit that was planted by CDC. I managed to finish my degree in psychology in 2014. I thank my parents who always made an effort to support me. I thank those at CDC for being so committed to each one of us. I know that they were there with me, although I often did acknowledge them. Together the team managed to support me to make my dreams possible, even though at that moment I was blind and could not fully appreciate what they gave me.

Today I have returned to CDC to be a volunteer and learn more with the adult women's group. I believe that togetherness makes us strong, I feel an immense strength, and at the same time a wave of tranquility to be back with the community at CDC.   Life forces you to live both bad and good experiences, it gives you joy, but at the same time sadness, like summer and winter, people come into your life, others leave forever, like in the autumn when the dry leaves fall, you know that they cannot adhere to the tree again, but they can be transformed into fertilizer to plant another good tree.

Today I am a psychologist, I live in Juchitan and work as a high school counselor in a rural community. I am studying for my Master's degree in education. I am part of CDC because I grew spiritually there because they took me in asking nothing in return, the only requirement there was to receive unconditional love, and let yourself just be.

I invite the teens I work with to fight for their dreams, resist any obstacle, and never turn their backs on good opportunities to meet their goals. I tell them that it is important to heal emotionally, accept unconditional support, value what you have, have discipline, be persevering, humble, have patience, and always be willing to grow.

I know the work that CDC is supported from all over the world. Thank you for your donations to help other students like myself to get a higher education. I hope you will continue to give to our program on GlobalGiving.
