Happy New Year! And thank you to all of our generous donors who continue to support Himalayan Healthcare’s health, education, and income generation projects in the remote, mountainous Nepali villages of Sherthung, Lapa and Tipling.

This New Year began and continues with great successes and hope for those served by HHC, building on the effort and commitment of this past quarter. We continued to support the construction of a much-needed 40-bed dormitory for school students in the village of Lapa, located high in the Ganesh Himal. $50,000 was contributed for this project by generous donors in the U.S. The hostel has separate living areas for boys and girls, with toilet and kitchen facilities and rooms for a male and a female proctor. Funds donated in this campaign were also sufficient to purchase the necessary bedding and other furniture and equipment. Without this dormitory, 50 young men and women would have no choice but to continue to live in rough, makeshift tents in the woods just to receive an education—cooking over campfires, washing when they could at the village fountain, and trying to keep their schoolbooks and papers dry during the monsoon. With the cooperation and enthusiasm of the local people, including students, we are thrilled that construction has been moving along smoothly and on schedule. Every household has contributed a volunteer and students dedicate their time to construction on Saturdays and during their school breaks. The foundation has been completed and some of the walls have reached 9 feet—only 12 feet to go. Every stone and piece of wood that has been carried to the hostel site represents a true labor of love, as the quarry is an hour away and wood must be transported for half a day!

The hostel is expected to be up and running in the Spring of this new year, 2015!

One of the major outcomes of this new hostel is that youth who would be the first generation ever in their families to go to school, and first in their families to learn how to read, will have the means to do so, and secure a brighter future for themselves and future generations.

Also in this quarter, Ellie Falletta—a student and global health intern from Globe Med at UC Boulder, Colorado, together will HHC staff—continued to carry-out comprehensive demographic and school needs assessment surveys in the three villages of Tipling, Lapa, and Shertung. The school survey has been completed and assesses the demographics, infrastructure, and teacher training at 20 primary and secondary school in Northern Dhading. Data were synthesized and analyzed and a final report was written by the intern and HHC staff ranking each of the 20 schools according to seven key criteria, including the availability of a water supply, access to a library, # of toilets, building conditions, teacher training, and student to teacher ratios. This report will be essential for prioritizing HHC educational funds in 2015 to ensure the greatest impact by reaching the most vulnerable members of HHC’s target population.

We can also report that our handcraft subsidiary, JeevanKala, generated $20,000 in revenue in 2014, much of which went toward wages for local artisans from the sale of their products. We plan to expand this as a method of income generation for the artisans as well as to provide funds for the medical care in the villages by setting up a JeevanKala e-commerce website.

The fall trek was also completed successfully in this quarter, during which time medical volunteers trekked on rugged mountainous paths for nearly two weeks in order to reach the three villages and treat nearly 1,000 patients! We already look forward to our next medical trek in the Spring of 2015.

We are tremendously grateful to all of our donors, and especially to Don Macleod for raising $8,000 among his friends, neighbors, and employees as part of his impressive marathon race. These donations came to us through Network for Good.

We look forward to your new or continued support of Himalayan Healthcare in 2015. Your assistance is crucial to our work and we are grateful for our GlobalGiving supporters!
