Dear Friends,
We are back with another inspiring story that showcases the dedication of PHASE Nepal’s team in ensuring safe maternal and newborn care in remote and underserved communities.
Sita Thapa (name changed), a young woman from Himali Rural Municipality in Bajura faced immense challenges during her pregnancy. With a history of complicated pregnancies, including a cord prolapse leading to stillbirth, a successful delivery, and a miscarriage, her fourth pregnancy brought both hope and anxiety.
She arrived at Bichhya Health Post complaining of periodic abdominal pain. Upon examination, her cervix was found to be 6 cm dilated. Over the next 16 hours, the labor progressed slowly, with continuous monitoring of her vitals and the baby’s heart rate. The PHASE Nepal team remained vigilant, consulting doctors at the district hospital and providing necessary interventions. Injectable oxytocin was administered to strengthen contractions, as advised by medical experts.
Finally, after hours of prolonged labor, the baby was delivered early in the morning. However, the newborn had a tightly wrapped umbilical cord around the neck, was bluish, and showed signs of distress with gasping respiration. The team acted swiftly, performing resuscitation with bag-mask ventilation and chest compressions. After 14 intense minutes, the baby’s heart rate stabilized, and normal breathing resumed. Post-delivery care included antiseptic ointment, vitamin K injection, and detailed counseling for the mother on nutrition, breastfeeding, and family planning.
The family expressed their immense gratitude to PHASE Nepal for their dedication and lifesaving care. The mother said, “You saved me and my family from another mishap of stillbirth, and we thank you very much.”
It is stories like this that fuel our commitment to reaching the most remote corners of Nepal, providing hope and care where it is needed most. This transformative work is possible because of your kindness and generosity. Together, we can continue to save lives and bring smiles to countless families. Thank you for being a part of this journey.
PHASE Nepal team.
