Himalayan Healthcare for 5000: Save Lives in Nepal

Because of your continuous kind support our PHASE Nepal staff are able to reach to the needy people. This time we have a case study to share with you about how our health service is saving life in Himalaya.

Gor Bahadur Shahi ( name changed)  is a resident of Mugu, where he resides with his wife, daughter, son-in-law, grandson, and granddaughter. They are engaged in agriculture for their livelihood, and their economic condition is relatively stable. Gor Bahadur Shahi's wife is physically disabled.

On the 17th of June 2023, PHASE staff received news that Gor Bahadur was not feeling well. On the 17th day of Gor Bahadur's illness, staff visited him to check his condition. They began by taking his medical history, and he had been suffering from Bacillary Dysentery for about 3-4 days. Unfortunately, there was no one available to assist him in reaching the Health Post, so he had been staying at home. His condition was severe, and he was unable to communicate.

PHASE staff recorded Gor Bahadur's vital signs, which were as follows: temperature 36.8°C, respiration 88lb, pulse 22 lb, and blood pressure 80/60 mmHg. They administered an IV injection of RL (Ringer's Lactate) 500 ml through the intraosseous (IO) route and also provided NS (Normal Saline) through the IV line. Staff also prescribed Tab Clotrimazole 960mg twice daily for 5 days and provided 2 packets of ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution). The PHASE team advised him to maintain good hygiene and stay hydrated. After 3 days, our staff conducted a follow-up visit and were pleased to observe that his condition had improved, and he had returned to normal.

Gor Bahadur's wife and son expressed their gratitude and happiness for the support, treatment, and care provided by PHASE Nepal. After 24 hours of observation on mother and baby’s health they were discharged with counselling on suture care, baby care, and personal hygiene, and exclusive breastfeeding, nutrition for mother, family planning, immunization and follow up care and mother care counselling to family members.

Dear Friends, with your support and contribution we are able to save life of needy people in remote Nepal.  This time we are back with a story of Pari Maya Tamang (name changed), aged 45, who lives in Ward No. 1 of Adanchuli Village, located in the Humla District. The Tamang family comes from a poor background and is involved in simple agricultural work. Pari Maya Tamang has a family of seven members, including herself, her husband, two sons, and three daughters.

On January 5, 2023, Pari Maya Tamang visited the health post because she was experiencing heavy bleeding. After taking her medical history, it was revealed that she had undergone a surgical procedure to terminate a pregnancy at a medical clinic in Adanchuli two weeks ago. Unfortunately, the procedure was not successful, leading to complications and excessive bleeding. In response to this emergency, the family brought her to the PHASE Nepal Health Center in Tumcha for treatment. The staff at PHASE Nepal treated Pari Maya Tamang for shock and noticed a decrease in her hemoglobin levels, so she was referred to Kolti PHC for further treatment.

During the ultrasound examination of Pari Maya Tamang, pieces of the baby's placenta were found in her uterus. Her hemoglobin level was only 6 percent, and her blood pressure was 100. In such a situation, the doctor advised her to undergo post-abortion care through a blood transfusion. Since PHASE staff Rasina’s  blood group and Purnima’s blood group matched,  cross-match test was conducted, which showed a normal report. Following that, they performed a blood transfusion, provided post-abortion care, and successfully saved her life. She was admitted to the PHC for 5 days and received treatment, including antibiotics, intravenous infusion, and iron pills. She was discharged after 7 days.

When they were leaving after being discharged, Pari Maya Tamang and her husband expressed their deep gratitude to PHASE Nepal staff and the team for saving their lives. They particularly thanked Rasina the PHASE Nepal staff who donated blood, as she became like a mother to Pari Maya Tamang at that critical moment. Both the husband and wife expressed their heartfelt appreciation, assuring us that they would never forget the exceptional service they received, and they even took a picture with Rasina before leaving.
