Namaste Friends,

With your continuous support, we have been able to ensure quality health services in remote mountainous villages. We have been able to reach women and children to have better health reach for better nutrition, antenatal care, and safer deliveries with PHASE health workers. In this report, we would like to share two success stories for to you have a glimpse of PHASE Nepal's Health Services in the Himalayan areas.

Case 1**

This is a case of eighteen years old Manisha (Name changed), who is from Bajura district.   Her family of six is dependent on agricultural activities for making their livelihood for six months and then on seasonal work in India for other half year.

Though she is at a young age, she was pregnant and her due date was near. With complain of abdominal pain she was brought to PHASE supported Kolti primary health care center on June at 3 pm.  On examination, it was found that her labor had already started. She didn’t have regular contractions and her abdominal size was found abnormal. She was diagnosed with CPD. Which required service from a hospital.

Her family members were informed about her condition and suggested a referral to a hospital. So, PHASE health team communicated the emergency need for the mother and the baby to the district health coordinator. They were able to arrange a helicopter for her rescue to a hospital.

Until the time of the helicopter arrival, she was continuously monitored and psychological support was provided. The helicopter rescued her at Surkhet hospital, where with an emergency C-section, 3200 grams baby was delivered successfully at 7 am the next day.

When she was back at home, our team met her during a postnatal home visit. Her mother-in-law shared, “Thank you for the arrangement and communication about the emergency need of my daughter-in-law.  If we had to travel by road another 24 hours would have gone and not be sure of this pleasant moment.”

Manisha shares, “Thank you for the guidance when I was at the health post. The way you talked with me kept my hope up.

I thought it was the end of my day. But here I am with my baby. I am extremely grateful for your support and advice. ”

In this reporting period, we have been able to conduct a total of 281 deliveries at PHASE-supported Himalayan Health Posts. Our team was able to diagnose 6 complicated deliveries which required timely referrals like Manisha to the hospital. Which saved the lives of mothers and babies.

Case 2 **

The areas where we reach are among the most remote areas of Nepal. Where most of the people are dependent on agricultural activities but are able to feed themselves for only half the year. In such situations, children are the most vulnerable. Where, our team is in a constant effort to avoid the serious conditions.

Meet here, Diwas  (Name changed) a 12 months boy from Mugu district Dhainkot village. He lives with his parents and two siblings, who are engaged in agricultural activities for meeting their daily needs.

He was met by PHASE health team at a growth monitoring event conducted by our team. Where his growth monitoring was recorded as weight-7 kg, height 71 cm and mid-arm circumference 12.3 mm. He was at mid acute malnutrition. He needed precautionary measures to develop healthily.

For his treatment, his parents were oriented about his condition, to take care of family personal hygiene and was provided with a nutritional food package. The package included rice, wheat and soybean and local ghee. And demonstration for preparing food with package ingredients. The ingredients were cleaned, roasted, and ground to prepare a paste that is served several times a day to the baby.

Every 15 days PHASE health team conducted a home visits for growth monitoring and to encourage him from time to time. In past two months, his growth was recorded as weight 8 kg, height 72 cm and mid-arm circumference 13.2 mm.

His mother shared, “All the ingredients can be produced locally. I feel we didn’t have the knowledge to utilize it. After sisters showed me the way to prepare baby food, I realized I was not feeding enough for my baby.

Now it is much easier to feed him. He eats much more than he used to. I am glad right on time, I was able to reach to sisters. He has already started gaining weight and is much more active than before.”

PHASE health team conduct regular demonstration event on preparing super flour for healthy growth of baby with local ingredients at door to door visit and with community events. This action has been effective on improving the health of the children.

*******

Thanks for your generous response and support. In the last quarter, September-December 2022, in total 13,460 people were reached through PHASE Nepal supported 13 health posts for consultation on various diseases, infections, and emergency health services. In this period 14,647 community people were engaged in health awareness sessions on infection prevention measures like frequently washing hands, maintaining personal hygiene, eating a balanced diet, and timely seeking medical advice through PHASE-supported health facilities, along with essential maternal and child health-related sessions.

******

On 24 January 2023 a 5.6 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter in Bichhya of Bajura district (PHASE project site) hit in western Nepal. Though there is an impact on the loss of lives, the essential health post building and birthing center are destroyed. We expect your further support here as well.

We are greatly indebted to those who continue to support us in this initiative to reach out and serve the unreached communities. We hope this support will be continued and encourage us to reach out to more deprived who are in need of basic and essentially required Health services. Please keep on communicating with all your friends and acquaintance for extending their support and join our hands.

Thank you
