Thanda provides a holistic response to the critical needs of children in rural Mtwalume through high- quality early learning, parenting, and social-emotional out-of-school education programmes, as well as organic farming interventions enable food security in order for households to thrive.
Children in this under-served rural area face barriers to their physical and mental development. Lack of access to nutritious food means that they have an increased risk of malnourishment and stunting, poor access to education means insufficient stimulation and development and lack of emotional support increases the risk of failing to cope with life's challenges.
Community hired, extensively trained facilitators lead various educational sessions for children across various age groups from newborn until grade 7. These occur within neighbourhoods and at Thanda's Community Centre. Focus is placed on teaching hard skills like literacy and numeracy as well as socio-emotional skills like empathy, problem-solving and critical thinking. Our holistic model brings children's guardians into the learning process too, with Guardian Workshops and Home Visiting Program
Thanda envisions a thriving rural population that supports the holistic development of children, their households, and communities as a whole. As the only non-profit organisation serving this rural area the programmes we offer aim to empower both the current and future generations with knowledge and skills to break out of the cycle of poverty and create positive change in their own lives and the lives of their families.
