Summary

SEED Madagascar (SEED) will provide the communities of southeast Madagascar access to improved education, health, and livelihoods while protecting the vital and fragile environment. Taking a multi-disciplinary approach, SEED will enable people to move out of poverty with activities that complement each other and address the people's multi-faceted needs. The activities we will deliver are informed by the community and will evolve over time, reflecting the changing needs of our beneficiaries.

Challenge

Madagascar is one of the most impoverished and biodiverse countries in the world. And there is no single cause of this poverty. The country has low numbers of qualified healthcare professionals, and health service coverage is insufficient. Quality livelihood opportunities are limited, with almost 80% of the population living under the poverty line. Over 1,300,000 primary-school-aged children are not enrolled in school. An estimated 85% of the country's animals can only be found in Madagascar.

Solution

SEED Madagascar will take a holistic approach to solve the multi-faceted needs of the Malagasy communities and environments. Healthcare provider training will improve access to and quality of health services. Support in product development and access to markets will improve income opportunities. Building classrooms will enable children to go to school who otherwise could not. Habitat creation and protection will increase the resilience of rare flora and fauna.

Long-Term Impact

The combination of improved healthcare, education, livelihood opportunities, and environmental resilience will enable the people living in the southeast of Madagascar to rise out of poverty. The multi-disciplined approach aims to improve the long-term quality of life for people and to protect the vulnerable ecosystems they live adjacent to. The project is enabling, provide people with knowledge, skills, and access to help them sustainably lift themselves out of poverty.
