Summary

India Home plans to develop New York's first community center for South Asian seniors that would provide culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate programs for South Asian seniors. This center, the South Asian Community Home (SACH), in NYC, will serve the needs of the growing South Asian senior population with culturally-specific programs, including a Creative Aging Center, Case Management Center, Social Adult Day Program for older adults with dementia and intergenerational activities.

Challenge

Queens is home to the fastest growing South Asian population in America. These elders of South Asian origin are new immigrants who live in poverty, depend on adult children, and speak little English. While there are centers that offer programming for seniors, there are few that are culturally appropriate, leaving South Asian seniors socially isolated from other aging communities. SACH will provide relevant programs to seniors that respects their culture and identity.

Solution

The South Asian Community Home (SACH) will provide these elders with food, health care, social support, and advocacy rooted in strong South Asian values. All the programming and services are tailored to the national origin and spirituality of the seniors including dietary restrictions. SACH also prioritizes health and wellness as many of the seniors enjoy their yoga sessions, exercise routines, and healthy eating.

Long-Term Impact

The project will bring independence and autonomy to New York's underrepresented South Asian seniors, and help them lead enriching lives through a holistic approach. SACH will be a home for decades and will live beyond our current seniors, to serve new seniors, their children and future generations.
