Many elderly Nigerians are stuck at home with no one to help them manage their health, especially in lower-income areas. This project will provide basic medical care, home visits, and emotional support to 200 older adults in Benue State. Nurses and trained volunteers will visit them regularly to check blood pressure, manage medication, and make sure they're not suffering in silence. There is currently no structured geriatric care system in Nigeria, so this home-based support fills a major gap.
In Nigeria, many older people are growing old without care. Most live with chronic illnesses like high blood pressure, arthritis, or diabetes-but can't afford hospital visits or medication. Family support is shrinking due to poverty & migration, and there is no proper geriatric care system in the country. In rural and low-income communities like those in Benue State, many elderly people suffer in silence, isolated and without help. Some go weeks without seeing a doctor, even when they're in pain.
This project will take basic healthcare directly to the homes of 200 elderly people in Benue State. Nurses and trained volunteers will visit each person regularly to check their blood pressure, manage common conditions like arthritis and diabetes, and help with medication. They'll also offer companionship-someone to talk to, listen, and report any serious issues early. For many of these elders, it will be the only medical care and human contact they receive.
This project will help elderly people live with dignity, comfort, and better health in their own homes. Regular check-ins can reduce avoidable deaths, slow down health decline, and ease pressure on overwhelmed hospitals. Consequently, it can also show that caring for older people at home is possible even with limited resources and push for more support and funding for elderly care across Nigeria. Most importantly, it reminds older people that they're not forgotten.
