Meraki Home is a long-term residence for homeless cisgender and transgender girls and adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 who arrive at the Home because of the violation of their rights. The home ensures that girls and adolescents have access to food, clothing, physical and mental health care, education, and recreational spaces in collaboration with various involved entities. Additionally, there are areas for play, vocational training, academic support, and cohabitation workshops.
There are thousands of homeless children in Buenos Aires who are exposed to extreme social vulnerability. After the pandemic, the child poverty rate in Argentina increased to at least 60%. In this group, homeless girls and adolescents are the most vulnerable of all. Due to the feminization and infantilization of poverty and violence, they require specialized care to prevent them from becoming victims of any sort of gender-related issues as well as help them overcome gender barriers.
The main objective is to protect and promote the rights of girls and adolescents facing vulnerability. Our main goal is to provide tools based on sexual education, reproductive rights, the menstrual cycle, gender equality, gender violence, inclusivity, cultural diversity, bullying, grooming, positive use of social networks, sign language, and personal leadership, among many others. We focus on accompanying them in their journey toward empowerment from a gender perspective.
Our critical support varies from covering the supply of basic and urgent needs, such as food and shelter, to strengthening social skills with educational and cultural workshops. This will allow cisgender and transgender girls and adolescents to become economically independent and empowered members of society in the future.
