The project will support 200 rural households to establish home and community gardens. It provides families with the ability to produce native, healthy vegetables that are scarce and expensive in local markets. Due to limited access to fresh produce, especially in remote rural areas, these gardens are essential for enhancing food security and self-sufficiency.
Poverty and marginalization in rural areas of Mexico have increased in recent years. Access to food and a balanced meal for rural families has become a greater challenge now that the products are more expensive and distribution problems have arisen. We seek to support 200 rural families living in two municipalities in Chinantla, Oaxaca, where significant inequalities exist due to limited financial means and poor nutrition.
This project improves the diet of rural families, by providing tools and knowledge to produce seasonal vegetables and crops during the year that are implemented in their homes and community parcels. Through training sessions and ongoing support, families will learn sustainable gardening practices, including crop selection, soil management, pest control, and water conservation. They will also receive tools and seeds to start their gardens.
The project will train 200 families to produce healthy foods, responding to immediate nutrition needs, while also building their capacity to replicate what they learn and teach others. By empowering families to grow their own nutritious food, it will improve food security and reduce reliance on external food sources. The project will also promote environmental sustainability by encouraging the use of organic and regenerative farming practices.
