Project Report | Feb 5, 2019
Update from the Field

By Marco Acevedo | Program Officer, Mexico

Dear GlobalGiving Supporter,

During the last week of December, we were participated in community assemblies to broadly share the results of our work, which include the protection of community forests, installing fuel-efficient stoves and composting latrines, and establishing home gardens. So we went to the Municipality of Santa María Jacatepec, to the Ejido of Rancho Faisán.

In total 151 people participated, and they pointed out the need to establish and participate in the creation of new home gardens that benefit their community and the integration of the local community monitoring brigades in more activities related to conservation. We discussed the idea of identifying local edible and medicinal plants that could be produced in the home gardens, as a complementary crop to the vegetables being produced.

One of the main objectives of these assemblies is to highlight the activities carried out not only by us but also by the community members that participate in the implementation of the activities, inviting them to improve the conditions of their communities and their nutrition with the inclusion of edible local plants.

In 2019 we want to further increase the production obtained in the family gardens and include additional crops as an incentive for the families of the community to make a more efficient use of the green spaces in their homes. And we are working to enhance the integration of the community and the local brigades in monitoring activities of their forests, to generate more accurate information on the status of their forests, but also to recognize their own territory and the conservation practices carried out in a common way.

I look forward to keeping you updated. If you have any questions or would like to hear about particular aspects of this work, don't hestiate to get in touch.

Thank you so very much for your support!
