Brain tumors are the first cause of death in children, yet they have a better chance of being cured than adults. Unfortunately, the treatments often leave important disabilities that require early and intensive rehabilitation, which exploits the plasticity of the central nervous system of children, but which the public health service rarely offers.
The aim of the project is to provide home rehabilitation services to children being treated for brain tumors at the Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital (neuromotor rehabilitation, speech and dysphagia therapy).
Key features of the project are:
- integration between the hospital specialist team and the home assistance and rehabilitation team,
- early management of the patient who receives services appropriate to his stage of the disease,
- "real" integration of social and health services in a single team for the medical, rehabilitation, psychological, welfare.
The result for the for the first half of 2024:
- 566 home physiotherapy services for 48 pediatric patients;
- 120 home speech therapy services for 8 pediatric patients;
- the costs for the semester are €24.318,67
In addition to home rehabilitation, during the year 2024 we developed two initiatives aimed at caregivers and adult patients:
- a cycle of monthly webinars dedicated to the training of caregivers.
- an online support group with bi-monthly meetings.
