For years, Ah-Gong Zhan’s mattress sat directly on the floor, making every night cold and damp. Getting up was even harder. Each morning, it took him more than ten minutes just to push himself up and get to his feet. “One time I fell right after getting up,” he told us. “I ended up in the ER.”
Today, a small but important change arrived — a new bed frame.
After learning about his situation, our team measured his room, compared options, and double-checked the materials and height to make sure the bed would be safe and sturdy.
When we brought the frame to his home, Ah-Gong kept thanking us, looking genuinely moved. We asked where he preferred his things, lifted the mattress, and worked together in the narrow space, aligning the frame and screws and tightening everything until it felt solid and secure.
When the final screw tightened and the mattress was set in place, the room felt warmer and lighter.
We invited Ah-Gong to try the new bed. He gently patted the mattress and smiled. “The height is perfect. Now I won’t struggle to get up.”
This simple bed frame didn’t just raise the mattress. It raised safety, confidence, and dignity. For Ah-Gong, it marked the moment he could begin each day without fear of falling.
(Ah-Gong: a warm and respectful term in Mandarin used to address an older man. It’s similar to “Grandpa” in tone, though it doesn’t imply a family relationship.)
