Many of the older adults hadn’t been to Muzha in 30 or even 40 years. This year, we took the group from Pingxi on a Lunar New Year outing.
After days of cold rain, we worried no one would want to go out. But on the day, the sun was bright and warm. Even after the nearly two-hour ride, Ah-Ma smiled and said, “Wherever we go, we’ll go together.”
During the ride, memories came flooding back as they pointed out familiar hills and shared stories about trails they used to walk. For a moment, it felt like they were young at heart.
Temple staff welcomed everyone warmly and guided us through the grounds as we made our New Year wishes. Cherry and peach blossoms were in full bloom, lifting everyone’s spirits. Ah-Ma said, “This trip is so relaxing. I feel so happy.”
When we arrived in Maokong, Ah-Ma happily asked for ice cream and laughed, “This is my first time having soft serve!”
Sometimes, a simple outing brings more than just fresh air. It brings memories, companionship, and the joy of new discoveries.
(Ah-Ma: a respectful Mandarin term for an older woman, similar in tone to “Grandma,” but not necessarily a relative.)
