Summary

Honduras Hope over the past 18 years has provided health care, clean water, and education to over 30,000. To break the cycle of poverty and improve health, small business support for women has been key. Tackling the interrelated issues of well-being, food security, clean water, climate change, self-determination and empowerment, a green community center will be built, serving as the foundation of a regenerative community, education center and health clinic in La Villa de San Francisco, Honduras.

Challenge

La Villa de San Franciso represents the rural poor experience, economically and educationally disadvantage with disproportionate poor health. Through all volunteers, we provide their limited health care but the ongoing unsafe water, food scarcity, and ever increasing solid waste, "managed" by burning, escalates health care disparity. All this, and in the setting of destructive slash-and-burn agriculture, the only means of "livelihood" indenturing villagers and furthering climate change.

Solution

Honduras Hope is a big little project. We are building a green community center to replace makeshift structures for our healthcare and education programs, and to serve as the foundation for a regenerative community (with rain water catchment, permaculture with indigenous plantings for food and medicine, and bee keeping). In addition to education focusing on children and woman, the Center will support woman entrepreneurs and be the site of a permanent health clinic.

Long-Term Impact

Worldwide, research has shown women's education breaks the cycle of poverty and health disparities. Development of the Center will provide 50-100 immediate work development and educational opportunities. Once established, it will support 20-80 entrepreneurial woman/year pursuing small business development and be an educational center for the village children. It will be a sustainable source of clean water, medicinal and food resource with education, and heath clinic serving over 2500 annually,
