Project Report | Jul 2, 2026
Progress report-July 2026

By Ahmed Abdirashid | Executive director

Summary

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we provided emergency assistance to 20 of the most vulnerable drought-affected families during this reporting period. The prolonged drought has left many households without reliable sources of income, depleted food supplies, and severely weakened their livestock—the primary asset and livelihood for many pastoralist families.

To help families meet their immediate needs while protecting their livelihoods, the project distributed dry food rations for household consumption and livestock fodder to ensure that animals could survive the harsh conditions.

What We Accomplished

During this reporting period, the project reached 20 marginalized families who were among the hardest hit by the ongoing drought. These households were selected through community consultations based on their vulnerability, including limited income, severe food shortages, and declining livestock conditions.

Each family received an emergency assistance package consisting of:

  • 50 kg of rice
  • 3 kg of dates
  • 3 liters of cooking oil
  • One tin of milk powder
  • 50 kg of livestock fodder

The food package helped families meet their immediate nutritional needs, while the livestock fodder provided critical support for weakened animals struggling to survive due to the prolonged drought and the shortage of pasture.

For many households, this assistance came at a crucial time when they had exhausted their food supplies, had no reliable source of income to purchase food, and were unable to feed their livestock. The intervention helped reduce hunger among vulnerable families, including children who were at risk of malnutrition, while also protecting livestock—their primary source of livelihood and future recovery.

This combined support not only addressed immediate humanitarian needs but also helped preserve essential household assets, enabling families to maintain hope and resilience as they work toward recovery.

The Impact

The emergency assistance provided immediate relief to families facing acute food insecurity.

With access to food rations, households were able to improve their daily food consumption and reduce the risk of hunger, particularly among children and older family members. Community members reported that the support eased the pressure of making difficult choices between purchasing food for their families and feeding their livestock.

Providing fodder was equally important. Livestock are a vital source of income, food, and resilience for rural families in Somalia. Many animals had become weak because of prolonged drought and the lack of grazing land. By supplying emergency feed, the project helped families protect these valuable assets and improve the animals' chances of surviving until pasture conditions improve.

The intervention also supported households with children who were at increased risk of malnutrition due to limited access to nutritious food.

Looking Ahead

While this emergency support has provided much-needed relief, the needs of drought-affected communities remain significant. In the next phase of the project, we aim to:

  • Continue supporting vulnerable families with emergency food assistance where needed.
  • Expand livestock protection measures to reduce losses among pastoral households.
  • Link families to longer-term livelihood recovery activities and climate-resilient agricultural practices.
  • Strengthen community resilience through improved food security and sustainable livelihood support.

Thank You

We sincerely thank our GlobalGiving donors for making this lifesaving assistance possible. Your generosity has helped vulnerable families overcome one of the most difficult periods of the drought by providing food for their households and feed for their livestock. Together, we are helping Somali communities protect their livelihoods, improve food security, and build hope for a more resilient future.
