Summary

This project will complete the building of a children's playground area in one of Greece's main hospitals, the University Hospital in Heraklion, Crete. Every year thousands of children from different countries receiving care will benefit physically and emotionally from a place to play together in the mild climate, especially those with respiratory diseases like Covid 19. Playing is proven to help sick children overcome their illness, build strength and help them cope.

Challenge

Acute and chronic respiratory diseases represent a global public health problem because of their increasing prevalence and severity worldwide. Covid 19 has shown us how fragile we are in the face of epidemics and how much we depend on hospitals working at their best. Crete's hospital lacks an outside play area which would greatly benefit the growing numbers of children requiring daily medical care as well as short or long term hospitalizations as they battle illnesses such as cystic fibrosis.

Solution

Years of financial strain has made it impossible for public hospitals to provide for non essential needs. By providing a safely covered playground with fencing, lighting and playground equipment, children of all ages and abilities will immediately have a place to help them heal, learn and feel less anxious. A credited Greek company will build it with certified and sustainable parts and maintained by the hospital. Plus a colorful mosaic made by friends of Crete For Life for a healing magic touch.

Long-Term Impact

By using quality materials this playground will serve sick children for many years and will support doctors, nurses and helpers working tirelessly to provide the best care and therapies for their young patients. The playground is at the main entrance to the hospital, which will greatly enhance the appearance of this beloved institution and elevate the sense of well being for the entire community. Parents say the playground will reduce their stress and greatly aid their children's recovery.
