An Update from M'Lop Tapang (Cambodia)

By Eve Sao Sarin | Director, M'Lop Tapang

Hot lunches. Not fancy but nutritious and filling

Hello again from Sihanoukville, Cambodia!

You were so generous in making an online donation last year to our “Hot lunches for 500 Cambodian children and youth” campaign and I just wanted to send you a little update to say how much your gift meant to us.

If you are like me you hate reading a report with just a bunch of numbers and statistics but my team just told me about a few numbers that I thought you might find interesting. This is the amount of food M’Lop Tapang purchased in 2014 to provide hot meals for the children here at M’Lop Tapang:

• 17,250 kilograms of rice
• 13,828 kilograms of vegetables
• 5,200 kilograms of fruit
• 7,704 kilograms of protein (fish/meat)
• 12,584 eggs

That is lot of food (all purchased from local markets) and a lot of meals. We could never have done it without your donation. Thank you.

Hundreds of Cambodian children here benefitted directly from your donation. Children like 13-year old Thet (name changed to confidentiality) who moved to the city with his grandmother from the poor countryside in hopes of a better life. They struggled from day to day, working on the streets collecting tins cans and plastic bottles to earn enough to feed themselves. Our Child Protection team first met Thet after receiving a call from the local police. Thet had been arrested for stealing. The local police wanted to help the young boy and asked M’Lop Tapang for advice and assistance. We are very happy to report that Thet is now off the streets and studying at our Education Center. Each school day Thet joins hundreds of other children in having a hot lunch in our cafeteria. He is excited to be in school for the first time ever and tells us he wants to be a mechanic in the future when he grows up.

And I know that you won’t probably have the chance to see M’Lop Tapang so I posted a short video in the link below near the bottom of the page that we just made. I hope you enjoy it. Thank you.
