The humanitarian situation in Ukraine deteriorated drastically in 2024, after russia’s invasion dramatically
escalated eight years of conflict into a full-scale war. Throughout the year, intense hostilities caused immense
human suffering, with thousands of civilians killed or injured, millions forced from their homes, families
separated, access to essential services decimated and livelihoods destroyed.
Approximately 17.6 million people – 49 per cent of the current population – are now in need of humanitarian assistance and protection1, an increase from just above 3 million people who needed aid at the start of 2024. The situation is particularly severe in areas close to the front line, and in the parts of Ukraine currently under russian control.
As you know, FHL is a rather big organization. At the end of February there were 176 staff members officially
employed at FHL, 36 of whom are IDPs. 38 volunteers also help us in providing services. We continue to help
our beneficiaries every day. Due to the constant shelling of critical infrastructure, Ukrainians lived all winter
without heating and electricity. But despite the constant blackouts and the Internet loss, we do not stop our work
and never give up. With the onset of spring, the lengthening of daylight hours and with the rise of outside
temperature, we are increasing the efficiency of our work with renewed vigor, spending more time in offices and
HUBs, helping everyone who contacts us, even though our resources are not enough to cover all requests for help that
come to us daily. We are sincerely grateful for the opportunity to support our beneficiaries not only with the services of specialists, but also with the necessary humanitarian and social assistance.
