This project for Water Supply and Sanitation covers 3 communities selected within the Western Rural District of Sierra Leone. The project is expected to increase access to safe water supply from 40% to 65%, and access to improved sanitation from 7% to 20% in Western Rural Sierra Leone, including improved sanitation access for 7,000 school children. The project also includes the development of a comprehensive national program for Water Supply and Sanitation.
Safe water and improved sanitation coverage in Sierra Leone is estimated at 57% 1 (57%2 ) and 13%1 (40% considering shared sanitation facilities2 ) respectively, of the 5.9 million inhabitants. Although Sierra Leone is among the eight sub-Saharan African countries which performed above the regional average of 26% in terms of the population that gained access to safe water during the last 15 years, the country is off track for achieving the water and sanitation goals.
This is a direct project where your contribution makes a specific and immediate difference. Clean water ensures better health and this is measured through our health metrics. It is expected that once we have demonstrated a successful model and we will significantly multiply the outcomes and multiply villages. Each home and family will have clean drinking water which will save them from illnesses. Water as the source of life is vital to these outcomes
For many, a lack of vital life-giving services such as water and waste management are barriers to relocation. This has to be addressed in any area and will act as a push and pull incentive to relocation. The reduction of diarrhea and many other illnesses will be seen many people can be confident of relocating to Destiny Village and the other two communities within 4mile
