Challenge

Solar PV systems are now widely used in Burma, but homeowners have no access to accurate information on purchase, maintenance and repair of their systems. Rural electrification is set to expand quickly, but there are few trained technicians available. Synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are widely used by farmers, but they are unaware of the negative consequences. Organic farming techniques need to be revived to improve food quality and safety, and to address soil degradation and soil erosion.

Solution

By training end users and those interested in a career in Solar PV, we empower them to manage their systems for optimal performance and longevity. The project demonstrates that the production and application of organic fertilizers and pesticides can significantly improve the quality of farm produce, at the same time enhance soil fertility and structure.

Long-Term Impact

Increasing the knowledge base in Solar PV empowers rural home owners to successfully light their homes with Renewable Energy, reducing their dependence on fossil fuels. Particularly interested individuals become resources to pass on this knowledge. A transition back to organic agriculture will restore soil fertility and reduce soil erosion in the long term. Increased quality and safety of food will improve health in the whole country. Decreased nitrogen run-off will improve water quality.
