Ayerwaddy Homeland Project

Father Benjamin founded the The Ayerwaddy Homeland Project in Maungmya over 20 years ago. A community of nearly 300 people they are developing a self-reliant lifestyle based on organic rice farming and education of their children. Some of the children are orphans and some are refugees from the 2008 Cyclone Nargis.

I was priviledged to be invited to their community for four days and see first hand their brave and ingenious efforts at building a self-sustaining community. After discussions with Father Benjamin I decided that the small Candle Replacement Kit (2 LEDs + individual solar panel), was appropriate to their immediate needs. I purchased 4 kits and they were received with much excitement and gratitude. The Community Forest part of the project, which includes boys' and girls' hostels plus a primary school, is located far beyond the power lines.

Three of the solar kits were given to the teachers who staff the primary school, and donate their services, receiving only food and board in return. The addition of clean, reliable solar lighting will be boon and a joy for these hardworking young volunteer teachers.
