Donations Sent to Burma Part 2

By Bruce Gardiner | Project Director

Climbing to the remote villages
Climbing to the remote villages

Like most NGO people during Covid, I have not been able to travel to the areas where I normally work. Many places that I have previously visited are experiencing very difficult times, such as famine in Madagascar, political instability in Haiti and civil war in Ethiopia. And of course Burma, where conditions continue to spiral down from political instability, through military dictatorship and pandemic, into civil war and economic ruin. It's hard to imagine what more can afflict this benighted country.

Athough Burma has dropped out the the headlines after the military coup d'etat in February this year, on the ground, things have only gone from bad to worse. I won't belabor or even enumerate all the ways in which this country is falling apart, other than to restate that the Burmese people are in dire need of whatever help we can render them.

Luckily, a few months ago, Solar Roots received a generous, anonymous donation of $5,000, which we immediately sent to Burma, to be shared betwen 10 groups and individuals that we know and trust.

Here below are some photos of two of the projects that were funded. The first one brought piped water to remote villages in the far north of the country and the second one set up a demonstration organic garden. As before, I will not mention names or locations, in order to protect the security of the participants.

Burma is one of the poorest countries in Asia, based on GDP, but one of the richest, based on unexploited natural resources. Decades of mis-management by successive military governments have left it with some of the lowest indices of standard of living, anywhere. Solar Roots is proud to stand with the brave people of Burma in their struggle to create a just, sharing and democratic society.

Please consider donating to help this cause. We may not be able to physically go there yet, but we can funnel resources to groups on the ground that will effectively use them.

Thank you.
