Teenage motherhood can create enormous social and economic challenges, but with meaningful support, young mothers can rebuild their confidence and discover new possibilities. F SSIBU Mission Foundation – Uganda is working to ensure that teenage mothers are not defined by their past circumstances, but empowered to become skilled, productive and hopeful members of their communities.
Through vocational training, young mothers are learning practical skills such as tailoring, electrical engineering, hair waving and modern farming. These skills give them opportunities to earn income and develop sustainable livelihoods. Rather than relying entirely on external assistance, they are being prepared to create their own opportunities and provide for their children with dignity.
Modern farming training is particularly important because it introduces young mothers to improved agricultural practices that can contribute to household food security and income generation. Tailoring, hair waving and electrical engineering provide additional pathways into self-employment and local employment opportunities.
Alongside vocational training, our program provides sexual and reproductive health education. Teenage mothers are empowered with knowledge about preventing repeat pregnancies, making informed reproductive health decisions and understanding the responsibilities associated with motherhood. This education is essential for protecting their future and helping them make choices that support their wellbeing.
Their children are also receiving vital support. Milk powder and free medicines help address immediate nutritional and health needs, particularly for vulnerable children whose mothers may have limited financial resources.
Monthly mentorship sessions keep young mothers connected to guidance and encouragement. These sessions provide space to discuss challenges, strengthen life skills, promote responsible decision-making and maintain motivation.
Donors are at the heart of this transformation. Their support enables vulnerable young mothers to gain skills, access health and nutrition assistance, and rebuild their lives. Investing in these mothers is an investment in healthier families, stronger communities and a generation with renewed hope.
